It is time we viewed the planet as if it were a human being. And perhaps even as the human mother of us all.

She is tired, exhausted and beginning to get a little angry. She does not like seeing her children fight.

She does not like seeing her children take more than they need or refuse to share or to assume superiority because of difference or opposition.

And despite our abuse of her still she shines upon us doing her best to provide for all.

But still many take more than they need leaving little for others.

And as many human mothers do, no matter how much hurt, disappointment, sadness, joy, frustration or confusion she experiences, she looks upon us with love.

Always love.

Whatever you believe about creation the truth is she was here before us.

If God, or what I know as God came first, then she came second.

What a gift we have been given.

And we continue to treat her like a trendy toy.

Treat her abusively while she’s useful and move on to the next one when we’re bored.

Her part of the bargain is to provide. And how fortunate are we that she does this and looks so beautiful at the same time.

Our part of the bargain is to protect her and take care of her and to meet her unconditional love with ours.

And we are failing to do this.

The modern human competes with nature.

Refusing to accept the natural process of life and death.

Mother Earth is the source of all.

Do not think for one minute that what she has given cannot be taken away.

Do not think that for one minute she cannot go all Pompeii on us should it become too much for her.

Already she is nearing the end of her tether.

Or perhaps we’ll do a Pompeii on ourselves.

If we view our earth as human, we will know that it is time for her to put her feet up for a while.

This means we take up the slack which demands we take less.

We start asking ‘what do I need’, as opposed to ‘what can I get’.

We start asking ‘what can I let go of’, instead of ‘what can I accumulate’.

For this is the mindset of a truly abundant and loving human being prepared to do what it takes in order to care for his or her mother.

Incredible wealth has been created through the abuse of the planet and the exploitation of many of her poorer and more vulnerable children.

If we are to correct these imbalances and allow love to guide us make no mistake, there will be more suffering, but it will be at the other end of the scale.

Are we willing to go through that to preserve our planet and to carry our brothers and sisters from poverty and violence?

I’m not so sure.

But I’m also not sure taking our greedy, selfish and self-righteous ways to Mars is a good idea.

I know the child will completely trash one toy before moving onto another, but it doesn’t work like that with planets.

At some point the child must become an adult and learn to look after what he or she has been given, before greedily reaching for more.

I thank Mother Earth right now for giving me – and all of us – everything we need.

I am sorry we have failed to understand how little this is and how much more we would receive if we could only grasp that truth.

Perhaps it’s time we stopped pointing diamond, silver and gold decorated fingers at mining companies and politicians and placed greater awareness on our own actions.

And perhaps it is also time that at the heart of these actions we placed the love and care of a mother who continues to love us and provide for us no matter who we are, how we look, what we believe or how much we abuse and neglect her.

She needs us now. Can we deliver?
